Nestled in the heart of North Charleston at 3361 Rivers Ave, Chow's Restaurant offers a delightful journey into authentic Chinese cuisine that has stood the test of time since the 1980s. This beloved local eatery is a nostalgic gem for many, drawing in regulars who crave those comforting, familiar flavors that celebrate tradition and home-style cooking.
Stepping into Chow's, you immediately sense the warm, no-frills atmosphere that feels like a cherished neighborhood spot rather than a flashy chain. It’s exactly that unpretentious vibe that makes it feel so inviting—a simple, cozy place where the food is the undeniable star. The kitchen serves up hearty, soul-satisfying dishes that awaken the senses with their rich aromas, vibrant textures, and bold flavors.
Signature plates like the Ham Fried Rice, infused with savory chunks of pepper steak, bell peppers, and onions, create a perfect balance of smoky, tender beef and fresh vegetables, all wrapped in fluffy, golden grains of rice. For those seeking a taste of comfort with a twist, the Fried Chicken with Teriyaki Chicken on the Stick is a harmonious duet of crispy, juicy chicken paired with a sweet-savory glaze that tantalizes your taste buds. Another standout is the House Special Lo Mein Noodles, which gracefully blend chewy noodles with a medley of savory sauces and fresh ingredients, showcasing a perfect harmony of textures and flavors in every forkful.
Chow’s appetizer menu hints at the same thoughtful care found throughout: the 1 Piece Eggroll Shrimp bursts with a delightful crunch, filled with cabbage, ground beef, and minced onions that deliver a satisfying mix of savory and subtle sweetness. For those who like variety, the 4 Piece Special Eggroll serves up an ideal shareable starter. On the lighter side, crispy fries and wings with fries round out the menu, offering comfort food that complements the Chinese classics perfectly.
Despite some menu changes and the minor inconvenience of cash-only transactions—something longtime patrons have adapted to—Chow’s remains a culinary anchor for many. As one devoted customer, Killionaire, shared, "Been coming here since the 80s... The food is still amazing... It never disappoints me." Whether you’re revisiting cherished memories or discovering this treasure for the first time, Chow’s Restaurant delivers genuine warmth and delicious flavors that linger long after the meal.
If you’re in North Charleston and crave Chinese food that nourishes both body and soul without pretension, Chow's Restaurant is an essential stop. It’s not just a place to eat—it’s a place to feel at home, savoring each bite steeped in decades of passion and tradition.
Been coming here since the 80s. Basically my favorite Chinese childhood spot. The food is still amazing. Even though I now live 25-30 from there, I still make it over there a couple times a month to eat. It never disappoints me. P.S They now ONLY ACCEPT CASH. Which is frustrating, because I keep forgetting when I go. The little corner store next to them, does cash back for a 3 dollar fee. Yeah I know ugh. Still worth it for me!!
I just didn't like the fact alot of stuff they took off the menu like sweet and sour chicken and egg in the fried rice... food was good I had tonpick out the onions and veggies. I wanted plain chicken fried rice .
I don't live in SC anymore but I still visit and work in North Charleston. Often I'll try and get into Mr. Chows and order food. His food is great! The atmosphere the neighborhood leave a lot to be desired, but it's incredibly good.
